Stories from the Scrapstore

It IS easy being green!

I can never say enough good things about the volunteers we have here at the Scrapstore. They devote so much of their time and energy to helping us run, and we couldn't manage without them. But as well as volunteering here, many of them also help out with other great causes as well. Shujaat Mahmood, our 'IT Expert', has been volunteering here every Tuesday since 2013, but, in addition to all he does for us, he has just become a Master Gardener for South London. The Scheme began in 2010 and is quickly growing, with Master Gardeners being found all over the country. Their role is to promote food growing in their community, eg events, talks, articles, community groups, schools – and other innova

Workshopping with the Windmill Cluster

The Scrapstore was delighted to welcome the Windmill Cluster of schools to our family of members in September. As part of encouraging their use of our 'sustainable' materials, one of our best friends - Ruth Moyler (Lead Practitioner at John Donne School, part of the Southwark Teaching Alliance and consultant with Linden Learning) led a workshop out of her mobile 'green shed' for 25 of the Early Years practitioners from the cluster. The exam question: make an outdoor puppet out of a milk carton and other waterproof and robust junk. The assessment standard: Bronze (completion of a set activity), Silver (completion of an activity with some freedom over the output) or Gold (open-ended activity)

Wonderful worksheets

At the Scrapstore, we are constantly amazed at the fantastic things that our members make from the materials they get from us, but let's be honest - everyone needs a little help with inspiration every now and then. While we have some fabulous interactive demos on offer, we know that it's not always possible to attend them, but don't despair! We also have a huge amount of worksheets available, for all ages and abilities. Check out our gallery below, and next time you're in remember to pick up a sheet or two!* *30p photocopying charge per worksheet applies.

No ifs, no buts, no third runway

Our General Manager joined fellow Londoners at the 'No Third Runway at Heathrow' rally in Parliament Square on Saturday 10th October. - organised by HACAN and the conservative MP for Richmond, Zac Goldsmith. The Scrapstore is an environmental charity, promoting re-use for environmental benefit and we are interested in all green issues, particularly those that may affect the health of Londoners and our local membership base. All of the London Mayoral candidates, including our very own MP and long-term supporter, Sadiq Khan were there alongside John Sauven the Executive Director of Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and many notable politicians including the shadow Chancellor John McDonnell.
