Stories from the Scrapstore

The Big Draw: STEAM at Smallwood

WaPS were thrilled to have the opportunity to run a Big Draw at Smallwood School Primary School on 15th November. The Big Draw is the world's biggest drawing festival - participants are diverse and from all of the world. Its all about celebrating the pleasure and importance of drawing and promoting creativity. - All values that we support to at the Scrapstore! The theme for this year was STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths - and this inspired Jayson Singh, one of lovely artist collaborators to develop an idea... On a typical day at Smallwood Primary School, artist Jayson Singh created an installation composed of two tents, some large sheets of white PVC and lots of kit

Crowning Around!

On November 13, we set up shop in a smart marquee, ready to show children how to make crowns while their parents viewed the artworks on display at Wimbledon Art Studios, during their annual Open Studios event. Our table was a hive of activity for three hours while the little ones cut shapes, lengths of ribbon and strips of sequin waste, poured generous sprinkles of glitter and copious quantities of glue onto gold and silver card to create crowns fit for any king or queen. The results were amazing and fit perfectly against a backdrop of the Studios’ dramatic artworks. Thank you to Wimbledon Art Studios and everyone who came along!

Teddies and Toddlers

WaPs have had a couple of fun days out at long-time member Wandsworth Childminders in Earlsfield, giving our famous Teddy Bear Workshops! After a warm welcome from Liz Hickson (Lead Childminder Development Officer) and Frances Kelleher Childminding Support Officer, two groups of around 20 children and their child-minders enjoyed a teddy bear story time, followed by great fun decorating their own take-home teddies - gluing and sticking, cutting fabric and paper, and painting and drawing. This was followed by playtime with toys and books for children and chatting time for adults. The childminders were all really pleased to be reminded that the Scrapstore is now open until 8pm every Tuesday.

Luscious Leftovers

Ever wondered what to do with that left over food in your fridge? Look at this recipe book for inspiration! All of these recipes and favourite food drawings were created at the Wandsworth Fringe 2016 event that we ran in partnership with Cool-it-Art, supported by Be-Enriched and Smallwood Primary School. Our event was about celebrating seasonal produce and minimising food waste - including a massive upcycled-junk aerial mural, food experiments and the leftover recipes included in this book. Thanks to Amanda from Cool-It Art for pulling the book together. You can see the junk mural from start to completion here.
