Remembering the Tooting V2 bombing

Work and Play were delighted to be involved in an event celebrating Wandsworth's newest green plaque, just round the corner from our wonderful scrapstore. The green heritage plaque is in memory of 35 people from Summerstown killed by a V2 rocket during World War II.

Summerstown182, a local community project, is running for four years, tracing the history of the 182 men whose names are inscribed on the First World War memorial at St Mary's church, Summerstown. As a result of their work, they managed to trace some local people who remembered the V2 bomb exploding that day and also, more sadly, family members who lost their loved ones. Many of these people attended the ceremony, together with the Mayor of Wandsworth and Sadiq Khan MP, and it proved to be a very moving and special occasion with an enormous turnout from the community.

Our Wishing Tree was installed in the hall of Smallwood Primary School and the children had great fun making leaves and poppies using resources and templates from the Scrapstore, before it was moved to St Mary's.

After the plaque was unveiled, a piper led us to the church for a reception where the tree was installed in pride of place and provided an interesting talking point for the crowds over a nice cup of tea.

It was really lovely to see all of the community coming together to make the day such a huge success.
